Super Cruise to expand to all Cadillacs other GM brands

General Motors says it will expand its hands-free Super Cruise driver-assist feature to every Cadillac model by 2020, with plans to add additional brands by 2023.

GM is "committed to ushering in a new era of personal transportation, and technologies like these will enable it", Reuss said in a statement.

Super Cruise is an evolution of the adaptive cruise control and lane keeping you may have in your own vehicle, but it adds a couple of important new features that even Tesla's very capable Autopilot lacks. The system lets vehicles communicate with the roadside infrastructure and anyone else using the technology so that drivers can have advanced notice of traffic lights, work zones, and more.

The Super Cruise is much harder to engage since it only works on Interstates and highways that Cadillac has already mapped, while I can literally activate Tesla's Autopilot in my driveway.

When active, Super Cruise controls the steering and speed, but again, only on an expressway.

For the unaware, Super Cruise is a form of self-driving tech that functions pretty similarly to Tesla's Autopilot system.

Judge Aaron Persky recalled over Brock Turner sentencing
Turner was released after serving just three months of his six-month term and has since appealed against his conviction. The judge has not issued a statement following the vote.

Once engaged however, Super Cruise was as reliable and nearly as smooth as Tesla's Autopilot over the same roads. Although not fully autonomous - which, currently, no production auto for sale is - it goes further than most in terms of letting the driver remove their hands from the controls.

If that sounds like an ambitious plan, it gets better: Cadillac wants to accomplish this goal during 2020.

Super Cruise launched earlier this year and only works on expressway in the United States.

"Cadillac is proud to be the leader for the company's innovation", said Steve Carlisle, Cadillac president.

The Super Cruise system will allow drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel for extended periods, but will stop the vehicle automatically if drivers are not attentive. GM employed Ushr, Inc, a startup in GM Venture's portfolio, to map 160,000 miles of expressways in the USA and Canada.

Last year, Motor1.com had the opportunity to test out Super Cruise on a 1,200-mile trip from Memphis, Tennessee to Sante Fe, New Mexico.
