Days feel longer? Blame the Moon for moving slowly away from Earth

The moon is currently moving away from Earth at a rate of 3.82cm a year which could mean in around 200 million years’ time each day will be 25 hours long

Thanks to the same force between the Earth and its moon that regulates tides in the ocean, our days are slowly getting longer.

Scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Columbia University found that days on Earth grew longer as the Moon inched further away. These variations ultimately determine where sunlight is distributed on Earth, based on the planet's rotation and tilt.

It is because Earth's motion is not less than partly decided by the our bodies round it, akin to different planets and the Moon, which exert pressure on it. The scientists utilized rock going back to 90 million years ago to catch environment cycles in the past, nevertheless, to no avail.

"As the Moon moves away, the Earth is like a rotating skater that slows down by stretching its arms", said Stephen Meyers, a geoscience researcher and professor from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It has already been discovered that Moon is constantly shifting away from earth since the very beginning, given the current rate of 3.82 cm per year, around 1.4 billion years ago Moon's proximity to Earth could have resulted in 18-hour days on Earth. We might have 25 hours a day in the distant future.

LeBron James: Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers wouldn't accept White House invite
James and the Cavaliers are now down 0-2 in their best-of-seven series against the Golden State Warriors. Pretty sure the way we handled things past year , we'd stay consistent with that.

The moon has started pulling away from the Earth. The moon even used to be just 22,500km away from Earth when the satellite first formed. This way, they were able to study ancient rocks the same way they study modern geologic processes. The calculations unveiled the fact that about 1.4 billion years ago our Blue Planet witnessed a full revolution about its axis.

It describes a tool, a statistical method, that links astronomical theory with geological observation (called astrochronology) to look back on Earth's geologic past, reconstruct the history of the solar system and understand ancient climate change as captured in the rock record. "They are like signposts on a trail, allowing us to navigate geological history", said Meyers. In their study, they combined geological data with astrochronology and Bayesian inversion - methods used to account for unobserved variables and the uncertainty in our understanding of the solar system at the time. It would take some "hundreds of millions of years" for the moon to get so far from the Earth that the duration of a day would need to be recalculated.

The Earth-Moon distance as reconstructed using TimeOptMCMC for the Xiamaling Formation showed that the Moon was moving away from Earth more slowly in the past - which means the amount of time our day gains per year is growing over time. "We are looking at its pulsing rhythm, preserved in the rock and the history of life", Meyers said in the statement.
