Kim Jong-un hopes United States summit will 'end history of confrontation': Moon

South Korea's Moon Jae In makes a point to Kim Jong Un at their surprise Saturday confab

South Korea's president says North Korean leader Kim Jong Un remains committed to holding a summit with President Donald Trump and to the "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

At the press conference, Moon said that the success of the US-North Korea summit hinges on working-level talks between the two countries, and that he has high hopes that the meeting will go as planned on June 12. "It's moving along very nicely", the president continued, adding: "So we're looking at June 12th in Singapore". "There needs to be a strong understanding of what both sides - what all three sides, frankly - mean by denuclearization".

On Saturday Mr Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in held an unannounced meeting.

"Chairman Kim and I have agreed that the June 12 summit should be held successfully, and that our quest for the Korean peninsula's denuclearisation and a perpetual peace regime should not be halted", Mr. Moon said.

Mr Kim and Mr Moon held talks in the demilitarised zone separating their two nations on Saturday in a scramble to salvage the summit.

"We're doing very well in terms of the summit with North Korea", Trump said Saturday night. There has been no response yet to Saturday's developments in Korea from official U.S. channels. Kim, who is now ambassador to the Philippines, also served as ambassador to South Korea and was part of the USA negotiating team that last held substantive denuclearisation talks with North Korea during the George W. Bush administration in 2005. But their quickly arranged meeting Saturday appeared to highlight a sense of urgency on both sides of the world's most heavily armed border.

It amounted to a smiling, thumbing of two noses at Bolton and the rest of the "crazies" who follow his advice, such as Vice President Mike Pence who echoed Bolton's insane evocation of the "Libya model" for North Korea, which caused Pyongyang to go ballistic.

Kim and Moon held a landmark summit at Panmunjom that saw the two agree in late April to work to remove all nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula and, within the year, pursue talks with the United States to declare an official end to the Korean conflict, which ended in an armistice.

But Mr Moon suggested Mr Kim was not certain whether Washington could guarantee the stability of his regime.

"Panmunjom, the historical land which had once come under global spotlights as a symbol of peace for making a new start of the north-south relations and opening up a new era of reconciliation and unity, witnessed the significant meeting between the top leaders of the north and the south once again after 29 days", North Korea's Central News Agency (KCNA) said. Moon sidestepped a question Sunday on whether Kim clearly mentioned if he would agree to the U.S. demand for complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation, saying that the two sides would need to discuss it at working-level talks. It was the leaders' second meeting in as many months.

Kim Jong-un’s outbursts saw the summit cancelled but now it appears to be on again

"We're seeing that commitment from North Korea and South Korea".

What needs to be sorted ahead of the summit?

"I think it's the North Koreans who have driven this engagement".

Libyan dictator Moammar Qaddafi agreed in 2003 to give up his weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear arms, in return for sanctions relief. Similar pledges in the past have not been upheld.

"Hey Donald, I'm already in Singapore, waiting for you to turn up", Howard X said.

A USA delegation arrived in North Korea on Sunday as preparations for the talks continue.

Before he cancelled the summit, Trump did not rule out an incremental approach that would provide incentives along the way to the North. DPRK is the acronym for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Getting this far has been a surprise given that North Korea had maintained its strident rhetoric - and continued its nuclear and missile tests - through 2016 and 2017.

Moon, meanwhile, didn't get an advance warning from Trump that he was cancelling the summit even though the leaders had met only 48 hours earlier.
