Danica Patrick Crashes At Indy 500, Final Race Of Her Career

Person found dead in Indianapolis Motor Speedway parking lot police say

The victory capped a flawless month of May for the man from Toowoomba as Power tuned up for the Indy 500 by notching up his 33rd career win with a victory in the Indianapolis Grand Prix run on the Speedway's road circuit.

She took her helmet off and walked to the emergency vehicle for the mandatory ride to the infield medical center.

"I'll miss you, most of the time", she said. "But I kind of said before I came here that I feel like if it's a complete disaster - complete like as if not in the ballpark at all, look silly - then people might remember that".

Overall, Patrick competed in 307 races in the top levels of NASCAR and INDYCAR, becoming the first woman to win an INDYCAR race when she prevailed at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan in 2008. She started the race from the seventh position.

The Indy 500 is the final race of Patrick's career. "I was wondering if I would ever win it and thoughts when through my mind during the month, my career", he said.

Patrick, the only woman to win an IndyCar race and start from pole at the Daytona 500, lost control on lap 68 of the 200-lap race, hitting the wall then spinning across the track before coming to rest.

Russian Federation says 4 of its soldiers have been killed in Syria
The biggest number of casualties came in March when a transport plane crashed at Syria's Hmeimim airbase, killing all 39 people on board.

Patrick, who shot to prominence by finishing fourth as a rookie in 2005, announced earlier this year that she would step away from racing after Sunday's race. Kanaan led at least one lap in his 14th Indy 500 to break a record he had shared with four-time race victor A.J. Foyt.

"Is that like the Oscars where they play you off with music?" she joked.

Patrick was running 17th at the time of her crash and it came just laps after a similar crash by EdJones in the same spot.

Patrick has been a polarizing figure in racing, and that increased exponentially when she moved from IndyCar to NASCAR. She struggled to run up front despite driving for a powerhouse Stewart-Haas Racing team much of her career, and she wound up with just seven top-10 finishes. She had her best finish of third in the race in 2009. "I will say that I'm for sure very grateful for everybody and for being able to finish it up like I wanted to". There are still a lot of great moments. She plans to focus on her business and entrepreneur opportunities in retirement.

The conditions created a slick, 2 ½-mile track, and new cars with less downforce proved to be a handful for even the most experienced of drivers.
