Russian Federation says 4 of its soldiers have been killed in Syria

"During the fighting, which lasted for almost an hour, the military destroyed 43 terrorists and six all-terrain vehicles with large-caliber armaments installed on them", the ministry said.

The attack reportedly took place in the eastern Deir Ez-zor province.

Russian Federation has been helping Syrian forces in an ongoing battle in the province of Dayr al-Zawr as Daesh struggles to keep its last positions in eastern Syria.

A Russian soldier standing guard in a central street in Deir Ezzor is one of a rumoured 4,000 or 5,000 Russian military servicement stationed in Syria.

"Two Russian military advisers, who directed the fire of the Syrian artillery, were killed on the spot", the ministry said according to the Russian news site Sputnik.

Four Russian soldiers have been killed in fighting in eastern Syria, Russia's Defense Ministry said, although a war monitor said the death toll was believed to be twice as high.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said the attacks had been carried out by Islamic State fighters and that 35 pro-government troops were killed, including nine Russians. Three other troops were wounded.

Russian Federation did not specify when, where, or whether IS was involved, but it appeared to be the same incident as the IS attack reported near Mayadeen.

A group of Russian private military contractors, who were helping Syrian and Russian forces in the drive against Takfiri terrorists in Dayr al-Zawr, were killed in early February when they came under attack by United States forces.

A local Russian newspaper in the Siberian city of Chita also reported on the funerals of four soldiers it said were killed in Syria on May 23.

The biggest number of casualties came in March when a transport plane crashed at Syria's Hmeimim airbase, killing all 39 people on board. In February, up to 200 Russian contractors were believed to have been killed by U.S. airstrikes after pro-regime forces launched an assault on US-backed Kurdish forces in Deir Ezzor province.
