Korean leaders vow to 'meet frequently in the future

The North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has surprised the world once again by meeting his South Korean counterpart for the second time in a month on the heavily militarised north-south border.

But on Saturday, Trump said he was still looking at a June 12 date for a summit in Singapore, adding that talks were progressing very well. "It's moving along very nicely". But it also followed escalating frustration - and newly antagonistic rhetoric - from North Korea over comments from Trump aides about US expectations for the North's "denuclearization".

Eager for a bold accomplishment, Trump agreed to Kim's March overture for a summit in less than an hour, ignoring warnings of seasoned advisers.

The Trump administration is demanding that North Korea completely and irreversibly shutter its nuclear weapons program.

News of the cancelation drew mixed reactions from South Korean political parties Friday.

US defense and intelligence officials have repeatedly assessed the North to be on the threshold of having the capability to strike anywhere in the continental USA with a nuclear-tipped missile - a capacity that Trump and other US officials have said they would not tolerate.

The pair also reportedly discussed Kim's potential meeting with USA president Donald Trump next month.

Republicans were more tight-lipped - perhaps because they, also, found no evidence to support the president's wild claims. He was asked to contact several campaign figures whose names had already surfaced in the FBI's counterintelligence probe.

The president made a decision to cancel the summit after North Korea attacked Pence for saying North Korea would end up like Libya if it did not reach a peaceful deal on its nuclear weapons during the summit.

"The only person who can pick the ball from the net is Moon Jae-in, because he can connect the two sides and he doesn't have to keep his pride over it", he said.

Moon said on Sunday: "Our journey to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and a permanent peace agreement can not be stopped, and we have chose to cooperate closely". The Blue House said Thursday that it was trying to figure out Trump's intentions in cancelling the summit. During the talks Kim and Moon pledged "no more war", as well as the common goal of the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea and the United States should work together to stop Kim from separating the diplomatic tracks and being able to "triangulate between the allies", Mount said. "It is critical the alliance maintains a joint position on negotiations".

South Korea's Moon said Trump's decision earlier this week to cancel his planned meeting with Kim, which he delivered via a bizarrely-worded letter, left him "perplexed" and was "very regrettable". Later, Kim Jong-Un assembled the party's military commission or the first time in two years. Moon then walked inside and shook hands with Kim Jong Un and posed for a photo in front of a large landscape painting, video clips show.

It remains unclear whether Kim will ever agree to fully abandon his nuclear arsenal in return, despite Moon's insistence that Kim can be persuaded to abandon his nuclear facilities, materials and bombs in a verifiable and irreversible way in exchange for credible security and economic guarantees.

Last month's summit marked the first meeting between North and South Korean leaders in a decade.
