Higher Seafood Intake May Shorten Time to Pregnancy

It also found that eating more fish helped the couples (who were all trying to conceive) get pregnant easier: 92% of couples who ate fish twice a week or more became pregnant, compared with 79% of the couples who ate fish less often.

Researchers found that couples who ate at least two portions of seafood per week had more sex and got pregnant faster than those who ate less seafood.

"Our study suggests seafood can have many reproductive benefits, including shorter time to pregnancy and more frequent sexual activity", said one of the study's authors, Audrey Gaskins, Sc.D., of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Mass.

FRIDAY, May 25, 2018 (HealthDay News) - Higher seafood intake is tied to a shorter time to pregnancy (TTP), according to a study published online May 23 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

All the participants were enrolled into the Longitudinal Investigation of Fertility and Environment (Life) study looking at environmental influences on birth success.

'We often forget about how the male component is just as important as the female component when it comes to conceiving.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 90 percent of seafood consumed in the United States is low in mercury and is safe to eat. The association between seafood and faster time to pregnancy was not completely explained by more frequent sexual activity, suggesting other biological factors were at play.

'Most of seafood in the USA in very low in mercury and the majority of women are not consuming large amounts of predatory fish, such as swordfish or shark, which are the ones that are high in mercury'. The APA recommends that women aim for two to three servings of low-mercury fish - such as salmon, tilapia, shrimp, tuna, cod, or catfish - per week. If this is the case, then the study could still suggest that eating more seafood bring couples closer together. These could include effects on semen quality, ovulation or embryo quality, Gaskins said.

However, in the review, beans were listed as being linked as good fir fertility due to being rich in folate, high in fiber and a good source of protein. This has been shown to improve men's sperm count.
