US Iran sanctions to target auto, aircraft sectors first: French govt source

Striking French rail staff up pressure on government

European Union leaders meeting in Sofia have backed a "united" approach to keeping the deal alive after US President Donald Trump pulled out and reimposed sanctions, complaining the accord did nothing to stop Iran's ballistic missile program or interference in Middle East conflicts.

Major European powers have sought to keep Iran in a landmark worldwide nuclear agreement after President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the pact and promised tough economic sanctions against Tehran.

The trio will "present their assessment of the situation" to their colleagues over dinner, it was reported.

On Wednesday, French energy group Total said it would pull out of a multibillion-dollar gas project in Iran if it couldn't secure a waiver from the U.S. sanctions. He also vowed to reinstate the sanctions against Iran that were lifted as a result of the agreement. "We promised to take political measures that would allow our enterprises to stay in Iran", he said.

Despite pressure from Washington, Macron insisted European countries are committed to the deal with Iran.

'This agreement is everything other than ideal, but Iran is, according to all the knowledge of the worldwide nuclear authorities, sticking to the commitments of the agreement'.

Maersk's move comes a day after French energy group Total and other European companies signalled they could exit Iran ahead of a reimposition of sanctions following the United States' decision to pull out of the Iran accord.

Maersk Chief Executive Soren Skou said: "With the sanctions the Americans are to impose, you can't do business in Iran if you also have business in the USA, and we have that on a large scale".

Iran has said it may start enriching uranium again if it can no longer see any economic benefit from sticking to the deal, which lifted earlier global sanctions on the Islamic Republic in exchange for it curbing its nuclear ambitions.
