Tennis player smashes racket against umpire's chair in post-match tantrum

Former world No 1 Karolina Pliskova unleashed on the umpire's chair after her controversial defeat to Greece's Maria Sakkari at the Italian Open on Wednesday (Thursday NZ time).

The Times reports that "controversy abounded" in Miami when a Pliskova smash in the deciding set was wrongly called out "despite clearly landing in".

The game was delicately poised at 30-30 but that decision ultimately cost Pliskova the game as she seems to lose her composure. Immediately afterwards, she proceeded to repeatedly strike the umpire's chair to drill a hole in it and then threw away the racquet in frustration.

She proceeded to approach Marta Mrozinska with a fake handshake before reneging and smashing up her chair with her racket, causing visible damage.

Cauvery management scheme: Supreme Court reserves order
The Karnataka government has objected to the control of reservoirs and said that it should lie with the state, not CMB. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have fought over the river for more than a century now.

USA Today adds that no punishment or fine has yet to be announced by the Women's Tennis Association.

Sports fans also took to social media to point out that several calls made by the umpire were wrong.

She argued with the umpire on several occasions during the match about points that went out of her favour and calls that were obviously wrong when shown on replay.

"This behaviour cannot be tolerated".
