Mark Dallas: Good Guy with a Gun Who Stopped Alleged School Shooter

Wednesday's shooting brings this year's total school shootings in which someone was injured or killed to 22. The officer's actions at the high school will be closely scrutinized, but the simple fact is, nobody but the gunman was hurt today, and keeping students and teachers safe is the primary job for school resource officers.

The suspect, a former Dixon High student, ran and the officer chased after him.

Following the incident, neighbors of Dallas said he gave the community a sigh of relief, saving dozens of kids. Milby is expected to recover.

"Although we have some good gun laws in IL, apparently they don't go far enough to create safe communities in IL". "We just thought it was firecrackers, then we saw pieces of the ceiling coming down".

The students cleared tables and moved them behind the classroom door to block the entrance, Skyler Scott said, and then they quickly grabbed boxes and stacked them against the windows to block them from view from the outside.

The alleged gunman's mom indicated that "her son was ostracized at school and left to finish his credits outside of class". "Her eyes glazed over had I grabbed her hand...and we were running", said student Emma Krull. "Thank God he don't kill anyone", said Julie Milby, the shooter's mother.

Feces-flinging woman attacks Langley Tim Hortons staff
The incident happened at the downtown location of Tim Horton's in Langley, British Columbia, southeast of Vancouver. The woman was detained by authorities and released with instructions to attend court at a later date.

The officer was praised in the aftermath, as authorities said his actions saved lives. This was as per the training they had received on what to do when their school was faced with a shooter. "A lot of things went right today, when a great many of them could have gone wrong", Dixon Mayor Liandro Arellano Jr. said at a press conference Wednesday.

Lee County Sheriff John Simonton also lauded the officer's actions, saying he saved an "enormous amount of lives in the school today".

Yet, Dixon will not be remembered along with Parkland, Sandy Hook and Columbine.

According to the North American Police Work Dog Association, Dallas is a former Dixon PD K-9 handler.

Multiple neighbors in the area say police were called to Milby's home multiple times over the last few years for family disputes.

Milby has been charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated discharge at a school employee and aggravated discharge at a school building, Illinois State Police announced late Wednesday.
