Ford to resume F-150 production Friday at Dearborn Truck Plant

Ford to resume F-150 production Friday at Dearborn Truck Plant

Ford said Wednesday it will resume production of its popular F-Series pickup trucks after a fire at a parts supplier forced the automaker to bring its assembly lines to a halt. The company had shut down F-150 assembly at the plants in Dearborn and near Kansas City and also stopped building bigger Super Duty pickups at a factory in Louisville.

The three plant shutdowns started last week after the March 2, 2018, fire at Meridian Magnesium Products in Eaton Rapids, Michigan.

The company expects production to be in full force at both plants by the end of the day Monday, a spokesperson confirmed.

Ford teams, together with suppliers including Walbridge and other contractors, worked almost non-stop to get the plants back online.

Joe Hinrichs, Ford's vice president of global operations, said the company will have to get "creative" to produce more Super Duty trucks to make up for the lost two weeks, including offering overtime to workers once the supply issues are fully resolved and the factory is running at a full clip.

This allowed Ford and Meridian to safely retrieve and relocate tools to more quickly resume parts production and work to minimise the financial impact of the stalled plants.

The F-Series accounts for nearly 40% of Ford's unit sales in the US and has been the top selling vehicle in America for decades.

Teams from Ford and several suppliers scrambled to recover 19 dies from the damaged facility.

Door-to-door delivery, accomplished in only 30 hours, we understand. In between, the Ford team received a United Kingdom import licence for the die - a mere two hours before the plane touched down.

Inventories of Ford's best-selling F-Series pickups and other vehicles remain strong and customers won't have a problem finding the model they want.

Reuters noted the F-150 full-size pickup generated US$41bn in revenue for Ford a year ago, about 28% of total sales and the majority share of its profits.
