East Coast main line to be brought back under public control

Exclusive: Government to 'renationalise' East Coast rail after string of failures

The government insists that renationalisation is not a "long-term" answer, and that its control over the service will last only until a new public-private partnership can be appointed in 2020.

Grayling also said that the government was assessing options for transferring some Govia Thameslink Railway commuter services operating on the ECML to LNER when the TSGN franchise ends in 2021 and enhanced cross-London services have been implemented under the Thameslink Programme.

Grayling told MPs that the business would be "publicly run for a short period", mirroring the period between 2009 and 2014 when Directly Operated Railways managed ICEC services under the East Coast brand.

Mick Whelan, general secretary of Aslef, the train drivers' union, said: "This is the third time in 10 years that a private company has mucked up the east coast main line".

Virgin Trains East Coast - a joint venture between Stagecoach and Virgin - had admitted that it overbid after promising to pay £3.3bn to run the service until 2023.

"Deputy leader of City of York Council Andrew Waller said he would be writing to Mr Grayling immediately:to seek assurances and guarantees of stability for residents, commuters and workers in York".

The Government has now been forced to take action three times since 2006 over problems affecting the Intercity East Coast franchise.

Paddy Power leads FTSE higher on USA swoop
Earlier today, the company itself confirmed the rumoured deal , saying that it is now in merger talks with FanDuel . The decision paves the way for all 50 states to legalize and regulate sports betting through state legislation.

'They will then begin the task of working with Network Rail to bring together the teams operating the track and trains on the LNER network'.

The contract with Virgin Trains East Coast which began only in 2015 will end on 24 June 2018 when the government will recreate what the Transport Minister described as one of Britain's iconic rail brands, the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) thus reinstating what was in place nearly 100 years ago in 1921.

The Government is to take back control of the East Coast rail franchise after its private operators lost money.

WITH the Government set to restore the LNER name to Britain's railways, we thought we'd have a look back through the archives and came across these old railway posters.

"It is now essential Virgin and Stagecoach are barred from bidding for any future franchises". The pressure to avoid any further franchise collapse - or to see Stagecoach-Virgin emerge as operators again, with a diminishing market of bidders - could see the government struggle to get a new operator in place.

Virgin Trains East Coast's contract will be ended on June 24.

Lord Adonis, who resigned as the chairman of the National Infrastructure Commission in protest at what he called the bailout of the train firms at taxpayers' expense, said Wednesday's decision was "vindication" of his criticisms, and that Grayling had now done the right thing. Quite the contrary. The disciplines of private sector operation returned more investment and better returns to taxpayers than public sector operation did.
