Officer and four attackers dead in Indonesia police station assault

Five dead in attack on Indonesian police headquarters

Riau Police Chief Inspector General Nandan said a group of suspected militants crashed a auto into the gate of the headquarters around 9 a.m.

Two policemen were injured in the sword attacks and another was killed after being hit by the minivan which was trying to escape the compound of the headquarters, he added.

The attack is the latest in a spate of attacks in the country.

The string of attacks comes as Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, welcomes the first day of Ramadan.

The individuals crashed a vehicle into the entrance of the Riau province police headquarters in Pekanbaru, on the island of Sumatra, and began attacking officers, National Police Spokesman Setyo Wasisto said.

One of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body, the report said.

This was the second attack on a police premise in the country since Monday.

US Sanctions Iran's Central Bank Governor, Alleges Hezbollah Ties
Treasury Department also issued economic sanctions against another top official, in addition to Seif. President Trump in April said Iran would pay a "price" if it threatens the U.S.

"Four suspects were killed by police personnel during the attack".

It was not clear if Wednesday's incident was linked to the earlier attacks in Surabaya, Indonesia's second biggest city, which have been claimed by ISIS.

"They were better organized.and suggest a higher level of capacity than what we have seen in recent years", said Sidney Jones, director of Jakarta-based Institute of Policy Analysis for Conflict.

State news agency Antara said two journalists who had been at the police headquarters were also hurt in the attack.

They are now pursuing a militant who had escaped.

They followed a deadly prison riot staged by Islamist prisoners at a high-security jail near Jakarta last week.
