Alfie Evans, toddler at center of legal storm, laid to rest

Alfie Evans: parents' legal battle to keep son on life support

Crowds gathered outside of Goodison Park, Everton's football ground, on Tuesday to mark the toddler's life as the funeral procession travelled through the city. Inside a hearse, Alfie's coffin was decorated with images of toy soldiers and the Everton logo.

Alfie had a degenerative neurological brain condition and his case drew global attention when his parents became determined to keep him on life support.

A private funeral for 23-month-old Alfie Evans will be held next week, it has been announced.

Alfie, who was born in May 2016, was first admitted to Liverpool's Alder Hey Hospital in December of that year after suffering seizures, and had been a patient ever since. Mourners applauded and threw flowers as the cortege passed by following a private service earlier in the day.

People also placed flowers, messages and balloons at the foot of the Dixie Dean statue outside the stadium. Fly high with the angels.

One woman told the Liverpool Echo she had come because "I want Kate and Tom to know I care", while another said she was "so proud" of Alfie's parents. Kate James and Tom Evans said their son's death in Liverpool had left them "heartbroken".

In February, a High Court judge ruled that doctors could stop providing life support for Alfie, against his parents' wishes, saying the child required "peace, quiet and privacy".

The case attracted widespread attention including from the Pope, who tweeted his support for the family.
