Tim Cook To Duke University Graduates: 'Think Different, Be Fearless'

At Duke's commencement Tim Cook promotes Apple's approach to data privacy in subtle dig at Facebook

It's not only Facebook that is taking the heat, the other tech companies are also being accused of collecting data from their users.

Cook, however, emphasized at Duke that Apple did things differently, explaining: 'We reject the excuse that getting the most out of technology means trading away your right to privacy'.

Cook told the Duke students they could be the solution to the epidemic of data abuse in American society. Facebook sparked outrage earlier this year by disclosing that a political consulting firm obtained data on millions of users of the social network. We've elected not to do that'. "There is a lot more work to be done to find all the apps that may have misused people's Facebook data-and it will take time", Archibong said. When Cook criticized Facebook on data privacy in an interview with MSNBC last month, it prompted an uncharacteristically sharp rebuke from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

"I was lucky to learn from someone who believed this deeply".

But while Cook often touts that Apple itself collects as little data as possible from its customers, it relies on a massive ecosystem of apps for its devices.

"This was clearly Cook trying to paint Apple in a positive light to a younger demographic and use the Facebook Cambridge situation to highlight Apple's strict data privacy standard", Daniel Ives, head of technology research at GBH Insights, tells Barron's. In every way and every turn, the question we ask is not what can we do, but what should we do, he further added.

Cook said his friend and mentor, Steve Jobs, showed him to never accept things as they are, but to dare to achieve something greater.

And in 2014, hackers were able to steal nude photos from celebrities' iCloud accounts. Apple's CEO also went back to one of JFK's most known morals as he stated that regardless of each individuals passion and the paths they take in life they should all Aspire to leave this world better than what they found it.

In his tweet following the commencement ceremony, Cook congratulated the students and encouraged them to be fearless.
