PM Modi congratulates Malaysian counterpart over phone on his victory

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad yesterday vowed to investigate faults that may have been committed by the government toppled in last week's general election, and said all ministries had been instructed not to destroy any documents.

"No deal", Dr Mahathir was quoted as saying in the article based on a live video feed from Malaysia to The Wall Street Journal CEO Council in Tokyo, Japan.

"I will play a role in the background even when I step down", he added, however.

Mahathir, 92 was sworn in as the leader on Thursday, making him the world's oldest democratically elected leader.

Meanwhile the head of AirAsia has apologised for backing the ousted government of Najib Razak.

Anwar, 70, is serving a second five-year jail term for sodomy.

Europa's plumes make Jupiter moon a prime candidate for life
Xianzhe Jia , a University of MI space scientist, and his colleagues published their findings on May 14 in Nature Astronomy . That's particularly exciting because it also suggests that Europa may have an energy source propelling the water skyward.

Dr Mahathir, who first led the country from 1981 to 2003 under Umno, is now Prime Minister under an agreement with PH that he would eventually hand over power to Mr Anwar, whose Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has the most MPs in the four-party alliance.

Asked about other possible crimes, Mahathir said: "We can not do everything at the same time at one go". He and his supporters say the charge was politically motivated. Mahathir sacked and jailed Anwar on charges of sodomy and corruption. Anwar worked from his prison cell to forge a new opposition alliance by ending his two-decade feud with Mahathir, a gamble that paid off when the alliance won May 9 polls and ended the National Front's 60-year grip on power.

In the WSJ report published online Tuesday, Dr Mahathir reportedly said he would not offer Najib freedom in an effort to reclaim the missing funds.

Mahathir was spurred out of retirement by a corruption scandal at 1MDB, a state fund set up by Najib that is being investigated by the USA and several other countries after Najib's associates allegedly stole and laundered $4.5 billion from it.

Asked about the possible prosecution of his predecessor, Mahathir said he thought that "in a short while", the government could have a case against Najib.
