Macbook users sue Apple

As of this writing, that statement is still on Apple's MacBook Pro site. This was first spotted by AppleInsider, which also has access to the lawsuit statement.

The lawsuit claims despite awareness of the keyboard defect Apple has continued to use it on MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops. Apple has been hit with class action suit for the failures of its MacBook and MacBook Pro butterfly swift keyboards.

Apple was likely aware that its MacBook's "butterfly" keyboard was defective before release and that it was prone to fail if dust got under a key, a class action lawsuit filed last Friday against the USA -headquartered technology giant claims. As per the claims of the lawsuit, the design of the keyboard is such that even small amounts of dust or debris that creep under the keyboard can render the keys non-responsive. The MacBook Pro debuted in 2016 with the new keyboard. The lawsuit asserts that recent models of the MacBook and MacBook Pro contain a defective keyboard with non-responsive keys. The appellants are seeking damages and legal fees, and demand that Apple admit to the design flaw and cover all costs for remedying or replacing the defective computers.

In the time since The Outline first published its piece, AppleInsider conducted an investigation of Genius Bar locations and third-party fix shops showing that 2016 MacBook Pro keyboards were failing twice as much as older models. Apple had advertised these keyboards to be "refined for greater comfort and responsiveness".

A little more than three years ago, Apple just announced a new MacBook with a "butterfly" keyboard that was 40 percent thinner than its predecessor, and ostensibly four times more stable than the previous "scissor" mechanism that MacBooks employed.

The suit is being represented by Girard Gibbs LLP, and is inviting more MacBook and MacBook Pro owners with notebooks that use butterfly keys to join the complaint. For example, support documents detail a method of cleaning the keyboard with a can of compressed air, a technique that rarely works, according to those who have experienced serious complications.

Apple does have a 1 year warranty period, during which time if users face such a problem, a keyboard exchange can be done free of cost. The lawsuit claims Apple selling these laptops knowing there to be an issue is "fraud by omission". Unlike other laptops for professionals, such as the ThinkPad (which had a butterfly keyboard of a different sort), the entire keyboard is bonded with the top case, requiring full replacement.
