Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told President Vladimir Putin on Monday that he wanted to further develop military relations with Russian Federation and stressed the importance of strategic ties between the neighboring countries.

Pashinyan, the leader of the Armenian opposition, was elected Armenia's prime minister on May 8. "Armenian relations with the new government".

The Armenian PM repeated his statement that the relations of the two countries must be developed independently from geopolitical factors.

In the second round of vote in the 105-seat parliament, 59 lawmakers backed Pashinyan's candidacy, with 42 voting against and four absent. The election capped several weeks of peaceful, primarily youth-led protests by hundreds of thousands throughout Armenia, which led to the resignation of former Prime Minister Serge Sargisyan, who had held the position for a mere six days.

"I am sure that Armenian-Russian relations will improve", Pashinyan added.

Armenia is under the pressure of its two large Muslim neighbors, Turkey and Azerbaijan, and must lean on the security assistance of Russian Federation.
