Five killed after series of crashes on I-80

A group of travelers, all from Clinton, Iowa, were killed Sunday in a crash on Interstate 80 west of Lincoln, Seward County Sheriff Joe Yocum said Monday in a news release.

The series of crashes began around 7:30 a.m. near the Milford Exit when a westbound vehicle carrying five people overcorrected after hitting rumble strips on the shoulder of I-80, crossing into the median and then colliding with and eastbound auto, according to York News Times.

A front-seat passenger in the Equinox, Susan Selser, 49, was killed due to blunt-force trauma, the Sheriff's Office said in a press release.

Both drivers, including the 76-year-old driver of the eastbound vehicle, were flown to Bryan West Campus for treatment of life-threatening injuries. She was wearing a seat belt.

The 14 rural Interstate fatalities this year is the highest number recorded since an equal number of deaths was recorded in 2005 for the same time period, said Fred Zwonechek, administrator of the Nebraska Highway Safety Office.

Other crashes were reported at mile marker 378, near Seward, and mile marker 367 near Utica.

Interstate 80 eastbound traffic was diverted at the Seward Exit (379) for several hours.

Numerous fire and rescue departments were called to these scenes. On I-80, there are cable barriers in the median from Adair in western Iowa all the way to the state's eastern border, with shorter stretches of concrete barriers in urban areas.

According to Nebraska State Patrol, one person was killed in the four vehicle crash.

One semitrailer truck caught fire, and the Nebraska State Patrol helicopter landed on the interstate to assist.

Abdiaziz Jama, 33, of Columbus, Ohio was killed when the semi he was driving failed to slow down and rear ended another semi, causing a chain reaction that included a third semi and a 2013 Dodge Ram truck.

His passenger, 30 year old Mohamed Apdullahi, was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Investigators believe Jama may have been texting at the time of the crash.

Selser-Smith and the driver of the other auto, identified as 75-year-old Anna Richert of Gresham, were both taken to Bryan West Campus with life-threatening injuries.

The third crash happened when an SUV failed to observe that traffic had slowed and rear ended another semi.

The semi driver was uninjured.
