Teacher of the Year Meets Trump, Wears Women's March and LGBTQ Badges

President Donald Trump presents the National Teacher of the Year award to Mandy Manning

It appeared that he failed to see them.

The Guardian posted a video noting Manning did not clap when Trump entered the room, nor did she shake his hand.

While Manning did not say anything to Trump, her clothing choice for the award ceremony spoke volumes.

Manning will spend the next year traveling across the world to advocate on behalf of teachers, according to the Council of Chief State School Officers, which runs the award program and praised Manning's "fierce belief in her students, unwavering commitment to their learning, and demonstrated efforts to ensure that they can be successful both in school and in life".

"Teachers like Mandy play a vital role in the well-being of our children, the strength of our communities and the success of our nation", Trump said.

Trump continued, "The job of a teacher is not only to instruct the next generation of workers, but the next generation of citizens to teach our children to care for others, to think for themselves, to love their country, to be proud of our history, and to be true pillars of their families and their communities".

"This year I hope to engage the nation in a conversation about how we can encourage students to experience things outside of their understanding", Manning said last month, when the award was announced.

Trump has cracked down on both legal and illegal immigration and suspended the USA refugee programme for a period. During the campaign, Trump compared refugees fleeing war-torn Syria to a Trojan horse carrying would-be terrorists.

Bruns' vehicle, a white Volvo, had received a dozen parking and camera violations since July 2016, according to city summons data. The Brooklyn Eagle has confirmed the report, which District Attorney Eric Gonzalez is poised to announce at 11 a.m.

Manning told CNN, "My goal is to share my student's stories".

Trump told Manning he was excited to read the letters, so much so that he asked an aide to put them directly on his desk, according to Manning.

"I just had a very, very brief moment so I made it clear that the students that I teach. are dedicated and focused", Manning said in an interview. "They have gone through very, very hard experiences, but they see coming to the United States as an opportunity".

Manning said the letters convey important messages about what coming to the USA meant to the immigrants and refugees.

She brought with her to the White House a stack of letters to from her students-who came to the United States from Syria, Iraq, Uganda, Burma, and El Salvador-because the kids "felt it was important for the president to understand the really rigorous and hard process and length of time it takes to come to the United States as a refugee", Manning told The Washington Post.

Manning began her teaching career working for the United States Peace Corps in Armenia in 1999 before spending several years working as a teacher and assistant teacher in schools in Japan and across the U.S.

The long-running annual event took place against the backdrop of teachers' strikes in Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Oklahoma and West Virginia amid complaints over stagnant pay.
