UNICEF To Raise Children Funds Using In-Browser Mining

UNICEF, the 71-year-old child welfare program run by the United Nations wants to mine cryptocurrency for the second time.

The browser of mines Monero cryptocurrency supported by AuthedMine, an opt-in version of Coinhive API.

Surprisingly, UNICEF Australia announced that users are able to give their computer's processing power in order to mine virtual currencies and donate the earnings.

While UNICEF Australia claims to be the first charity to be engaging in cryptocurrency mining, it could catch on like wildfire, especially considering the global influence that UNICEF as an organization has.

Cryptocurrency mining is not an entirely new concept and while it has been embroiled with controversies due to some unscrupulous individuals, UNICEF Australia has used it for the greater good. Any cryptocurrency mind is converted into fiat and donated to UNICEF's account to fund its activities which are to help vulnerable children worldwide with life-saving supplies such as safe drinking water, food, and vaccines. Monero is now the 12 biggest cryptocurrency in the world.

Roma players wear 'Forza Sean' t-shirts in support of Liverpool fan
Sean is now recovering in hospital and some fine folks have set up a Go Fund Me page to raise money for his medical bills. Yesterday there were reports doctors hope to bring Cox out of his coma.

The website allows the visitor to select how much processing power they want to contribute to the cause, which can be stopped at any time by exiting the website. "The HopePage allows Australians to provide help and hope to vulnerable children by simply opening the page while they are online", according to UNICEF Australia's Jennifer Tierney quoted in reports.

The mining operates per session and doesn't start until the user chooses a percentage and then clicks the "Confirm" button. The mining continues for as long as the user keeps the page open.

The processing power Nvidia's GPUs are capable of has made them a useful tool for those dealing in ether, but the company's CEO would prefer the GPUs be kept for use in areas such as gaming or high-performance computing.

Based on information provided by UNICEF, the site uses some of the processing power of the users' computer to automatically generate funds for UNICEF Australia, via a Coinhive webminer. Several children and families that have fled their homes in Myanmar to escape military-led violence are now living in refugee camps in the neighboring country of Bangladesh and require certain necessities while they await placement. The cost is not tax deductible, so they can decide which option is best for them. "If you're ever anxious about power consumption, turn down the amount of processing power you're donating", Unicef explains.
