Judge Strikes Down Appeal For Alfie Evans' Life

Pope Francis prayed for Alfie Evans during his Sunday address in in St Peter's Square in Rome

In February, Mr Justice Hayden ruled that doctors at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool could stop treating Alfie against the wishes of his parents following hearings in the Family Division of the High Court in London and Liverpool.

Alfie Evans, from Liverpool, is on a life support machine and requires round-the-clock treatment at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in the city.

Alfie's parents last week said their son had improved in recent weeks and they had asked Mr Justice Hayden to allow a new assessment, however he had refused.

The court ruled that his life support won't be turned off until the Supreme Court has reached its decision.

The legal battle between Alfie Evans' parents and doctors comes as Alder Hey, one of only four specialist children's hospitals in England, was found to have failed four in five standard checks during an unannounced inspection, The Guardian reported Saturday.

The toddler is battling an undiagnosed brain disease, according to reports.

West Ham look to boost survival hopes with Stoke win
West Ham: Arsenal (away); Manchester City (home); Leicester (away); Manchester United (home); Everton (home). West Ham ended an eight-game winless streak against Stoke by winning the reverse fixture 3-0 in December.

"As has been determined with considerable clarity in this case, Alfie's best interests are determinative and the court has decided what treatment he should or should not receive".

In addition, Moylan said it is "wrong to say that the parents' own views can trump that judicial determination", according to LifeSiteNews.

Alder Hey Children's Hospital said in a statement: "At each stage of the legal process the courts have agreed with expert advisers... that Alfie's condition is untreatable". The court expressly determined that it would be lawful, because treatment would be in Alfie's best interests and that no other available course would be.

"We fully understand what a sensitive and emotional time this is for everyone involved and I would also therefore like to pass on our appreciation for the way in which Alfie's family were later able to speak to the crowd and offer assurance and calm".

The parents do, however, have the right to directly ask the Supreme Court for permission to appeal.

Bosses at a group which fights for Christians' rights, the Christian Legal Centre, are helping Alfie's parents. Moylan argued, however, that both Bambino Gesu staff and staff at Alder Hey agree that no hope remains for curative or preventative treatment for Alfie and that he should receive end of life care.
