Democrats' midterm advantage narrows in new poll - KVOA | KVOA.com | Tucson, Arizona

Kentucky representative Thomas Massie ran through a list of questions that had been raised by Trump's action

Fewer, but still half, call it important for them to back a candidate who shares their view of Donald Trump, and a yet small number, about a third, are looking for a candidate who agrees with them about Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader.

The 19-point advantage is significantly larger than the final results of recent congressional elections. That includes roughly equal numbers on both sides of the issue - whether they prioritize enacting new laws to reduce gun violence or protecting the right to own guns. Almost half of New Jersey residents believe their taxes will go up because of the law, and only 19 percent think they will go down. Nationally the new law has 41 percent support, while 42 percent are against it.

The Democrats held a 21-point edge in the seven districts they now hold, compared with 26 percent in the 2014 midterm elections.

Mr. Trump touted the benefits of the tax overhaul at an event Monday in Hialeah, Fla. "I received a tax cut I neither need nor want". "We've had tremendous success from the company standpoint and from the people's standpoint".

Using another gauge, registered voters who see Trump favorably as a person are 10 points more likely than those who see him unfavorably to seek a candidate who agrees with them.

Many New Jerseyans aren't fans of the new federal tax law, either. In 2016, 59% of voters in these areas went with the Republican candidate, compared with 38% for the Democrat. Those issues have traditionally played to the GOP's strength.

"Not only are New Jersey Democrats doing better on the generic House ballot statewide, but the shift is coming nearly entirely from districts now held by the GOP", Murray said.

A GOP mega-donor and hedge fund billionaire is fed up with the president and Republicans' inability to get things done despite having control of the Congress and the White House, so he's giving his money to Democrats. In December, when the question was last asked, Democrats had been viewed as better able to handle taxes.

The poll also found that the Republicans' tastes were in line with previous election results in the seven districts together with Democrats at the House.

The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that the number of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents registered to votes has fallen to 75% from 84% in November.

Only one New Jersey lawmaker, Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-3rd Dist., supported the Republican tax bill.

The poll found Democrats leading by double-digit margins on their ability to handle sexual harassment, health care and gun violence.

The poll surveyed 703 New Jersey adults by telephone April 6-10, 632 of whom are registered voters. It had a margin of error plus or minus 3.7 percentage points for your complete sample and 3.9 percentage points for registered voters.
