Tennis, Monte Carlo Masters: Djokovic reaches second round

Novak Djokovic

Lajovic, ranked 93 in the world, offered resistance in the second set to level at 1-1 but failed to capitalize on a break point as the 12-time grand slam victor roared back to book a second round meeting with Borna Coric of Croatia.

World No.1 tennis player Rafael Nadal who recently recovered from his hip injury, will be competing at Monte Carlo Masters title this week.

It was an impressive performance from the 30-year-old in his first match since splitting from coach Andre Agassi and starting to work again with long-time former coach Marian Vajda.

"I feel like every time I had chances, something bad happened: wrong decision-making by me, good decision-making by him".

Meanwhile, Nadal is now in Monaco for the Monte Carlo Masters.

"I've had a very hard time in the last 12 months with the injury and everything else that's happened".

Here's a look at the main talking points ahead of the action on the red dirt of the Principality.

Over the course of the near one-hour match, Djokovic kept compatriot Lajovic guessing with his disguised forehand drop-shots and powerful down-the-line backhands that brought rapturous applause from the crowd at the show court.

Manchester City confirmed as champions as rivals United lose
The Portuguese manager said that City deserved their title and he had offered them his congratulations after the derby win. But at Old Traffrord Stadium at home, Man United failed to muster an equaliser to Jay Rodriguez's 73rd-minute strike.

Earlier on Monday, Japan's Kei Nishikori fought back from a set down to see off Czech 12th seed Tomas Berdych and reach the second round. Thiem the No. 5 seed and two-time French Open semi-finalist or Croatia's Coric, who made the semis and quarters in the opening two Masters 1000 events of the season, could also face Nadal in the last-eight.

"It's not great but first match on clay, I'm expecting (a) little soreness", Nishikori said.

'I'm looking to having good days of practice before the tournament starts and when the competition arrives I will be ready for it'.

The 36-year-old is now on a five-match winning streak against the 16-time Grand Slam champion, though they haven't done battle on clay since 2013.

Last year's runner-up Albert Ramos-Vinolas beat American Jared Donaldson 6-3 6-3 in a match marred by a heated argument between the 21-year-old Donaldson and the chair umpire over what he thought was an erroneous call.

Donaldson received a code violation.

Ramos-Vinolas, who lost last year's final to Nadal, was leading by a set and a break at the time and went on to win 6-3, 6-3.
