Russian Federation slams joint airstrikes in Syria

A missile is seen crossing over Damascus Syria

Russia, a key ally of the Assad government, is calling for an immediate UN Security Council meeting, he said.

Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry in a statement said Russian military bases in Syria had not been affected by the joint strike.

"The situation is being analyzed right now".

Evgeny Serebrennikov, deputy head of the defense committee of Russia's upper house of parliament, said Moscow was ready for the new penalties.

Overnight, US, British and French forces launched more than 100 missiles from ships and manned aircraft, targeting three of Syria's main chemical weapons facilities.

Wednesday: Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russian military inspectors found no evidence of a chemical attack.

Thursday: Russia's Embassy to Britain tweeted that the chemical attack was "fake" and an attempt to stage a provocation by Syrian extremists and their foreign backers.

Russian Federation has been a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government and has helped turn the tide of war in his favor since entering the conflict in September 2015.

Ambassador Antonov said: "Insulting the President of Russian Federation is unacceptable and inadmissible".

Nikki Haley told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called by Russian Federation that should the USA and its allies decide to act in Syria it will be to defend "a bedrock global norm that benefits all nations" - the prohibition on the use of chemical weapons.
