'Rampage' sneaks past 'Quiet Place' to a box-office lead

On Friday afternoon, New Line's Rampage appeared to be dropping like a rock at the USA box office, with first projections suggesting the big-budget movie might not earn much more than $28 million in its launch.

Rampage had a big first weekend domestically, but as EW notes, it's first-weekend haul is on the low side of industry projections, which had it making in the $35 million-$40 million. The second-largest movie market in the world is constantly a major focus by Hollywood because of its incredible growth over the last decade, and this weekend proved that they love Dwayne Johnson over there as the movie took in $55 million its opening weekend in the Middle Kingdom when the estimates come in. The movie failed to impress critics but garnered an A-minus CinemaScore, suggesting decent word-of-mouth prospects. That will be enough to push the film past Paramount's hit horror film "A Quiet Place" for the top spot on this weekend's charts. Universal's R-rated comedy Blockers rounded out the top five with $10.3 million for a tepid 10-day domestic cume of $36.9 million.

New release "Truth Or Dare" was #3 on Friday the 13th with $8.2 million.

Boston's Terry Rozier hit the expected game-winner for Boston to take a three-point lead with just over a second left. Despite the injuries, Boston still reeled off 55 wins, good for second place in the Eastern Conference.

"Because it's a movie about a family that needs to remain quiet, this is such a flawless atmosphere and one of the best scenes to tell the rules of how to remain quiet, what happens if you don't", Krasinski says in the video.

Both films will have a chance to add to their totals next week (with the only new competition coming in the form of I Feel Pretty, Super Troopers 2, and Traffik) before the real 2,000 pound gorilla of the summer season, Avengers: Infinity War, opens nationwide on April 26. Audiences gave it a B-minus CinemaScore.

Ready Player One, which gave up Imax screens to Rampage, fell 54 percent over the weekend to $11.2 million for a domestic tally of $114.6 million.
