President Trump reportedly backpedals on new Russian sanctions, reversing Nikki Haley's announcement

Official says Trump misled by aides on number of Russian diplomats to be expelled

"As a military spouse, I know that "mission accomplished" means you have one task now in front of you, and when it's completed, it is mission accomplished", Ms. Haley said.

Haley, in her Fox News interview, also defended its use as a military term, rather than as a broader political statement.

The strike on President Bashar Assad's chemical weapons facilities was the price Syria paid for using chemical weapons on its citizens.

She also accused the Russians of covering up crimes committed by its ally, Assad, who she said had used chemical weapons 50 times in the past seven years of warfare.

The sanctions are created to hit Russian Federation for its support for the Assad government after last week's apparent chemical attack on Syrian civilians.

James Piazza, a Penn State professor and Middle East expert, said he suspects the missile attacks will have a "negligible" effect on Syria's chemical weapons abilities.

On the "Fox News Sunday" program, Haley again slammed Russian Federation, accusing it of enabling the Syrian government to use chemical weapons without worrying about blowback at the United Nations.

Haley, speaking on CBS News' "Face the Nation," suggested that there are no plans to pare down the US presence in Syria anytime soon.

She said '[Our goal is] to see American troops come home, but we are not going to leave until we know we have accomplished those things'. Militarily, she said it "means one task now in front of you".

What do the US UK and French airstrikes mean for Syria's war
President Trump reportedly backpedals on new Russian sanctions, reversing Nikki Haley's announcement

That agreement was brokered by Moscow to avert retaliatory United States strikes in the wake of a sarin attack in the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus on August 21, 2013 that reportedly killed more than 1,400 civilians.

Haley and other Western diplomats have accused Russian Federation of trying to protect the Assad government.

USA military officials said an initial assessment showed every one of the missiles struck its target on Saturday, reducing the facilities to rubble while avoiding any civilian casualties.

Talking points provided by the White House to DailyMail.com on Saturday mentioned upcoming sanctions and emphasized the grotesqueness of the photos of "dead and dying children" as a 'call to action among the world's civilized nations'. The U.S. and its allies accused Assad's forces of using chemical weapons, a claim Syria and Russian Federation have rejected.

Haley spoke two days after the United States, France and Britain struck at three facilities that the administration called the "heart" of Syria's chemical-weapons program.

US defense officials say they have high confidence chlorine gas was used and are still assessing evidence indicating the presence of sarin gas.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry Saturday condemned what it called "the brutal American-British-French aggression... which constitutes a flagrant violation of worldwide law".

He said on Sunday that new Western air strikes in Syria would provoke "chaos" in global relations while speaking to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani by telephone.
