'Consequences' for Syria strike: Russian Federation

Chemical Attacks in Syria UN Council Must Prevent Syria'Spiralling Out of Control, Says Antonio Guterres

Friday: "Today, the Russian defense ministry has other evidence proving the United Kingdom's direct involvement in the organization of this provocation in Eastern Ghouta", Igor Konashenkov, Russia's defense ministry spokesman, said, according to the Russian government news site Tass.

Iran, the Assad regime's other key ally, called the USA -led strikes an "aggression" that was "a flagrant violation of worldwide laws and a disregard for Syria's right of national sovereignty and territorial integrity", according to Iran's semi-official FARS News agency.

"All nations and all people will be harmed if we allow Assad to normalize the use of chemical weapons".

"The immediate priority is to avert the danger of war", said Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia.

Russian Federation says there is no evidence of a chemical attack in Douma and has warned the United States and its allies against carrying out any military strike.

A Downing Street spokesperson added: "They agreed it was vital that the use of chemical weapons did not go unchallenged, and on the need to deter the further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime".

"I hope hot heads will cool down and that will be it", he told reporters.

Russia's denial that the Assad government was responsible for the chemical weapons attack, further angered Trump, one of the USA officials said.

John Hannah, senior counselor at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, who has worked with Bolton in the past, said Bolton was opposed to "empty symbolic gestures that make us feel good but have no strategic effects".

Carlos Sainz took ninth in the second Renault, 0.287s off his teammate Hulkenberg, with Romain Grosjean tenth in the Haas. The Dutch youngster later apologised in person to Vettel and to his Red Bull team on social media.

Sheikh Naim Qassem, deputy leader of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement, told Lebanese daily al-Joumhouria: "The conditions do not point to a total war happening. unless Trump and (Israeli leader Benjamin) Netanyahu completely lose their minds".

Russia's Canadian embassy tweeted, "Washington & its UK/French allies should and will be held #responsible for this brazen act of #aggression and disregard of worldwide law".

Wednesday: Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russian military inspectors found no evidence of a chemical attack. The Kremlin readout said that Putin warned against rushing to blame the Syrian government before conducting a "thorough and objective probe".

The investigators, who are only mandated to determine if chemical weapons were used and not who used them, were expected to start their investigations into the Douma incident on Saturday, the Netherlands-based agency said.

Russian officials condemned the USA -led airstrikes on three sites in Syria early Saturday, calling the attacks "treacherous and insane" and a "clear and present danger to world peace".

Global stock markets have had a whipsaw week, largely fuelled by Trump's tendency to change his mind over top policy issues.

On the ground in Syria, rebels in Eastern Ghouta surrendered their heavy weapons and their leader left the enclave, signalling the end of one of the bloodiest assaults of the seven-year war and a major win for the Assad regime. Rebels and jihadist insurgents are largely contained to two areas along Syria's northern and southern borders.
