Sensex today: Markets opened higher at 33090.82 points, PSU banks gain

The BSE Sensex had gained 73.64 points in a volatile session on Tuesday

All eyes are on the outcome of two-day US Federal Reserve's policy meeting that is scheduled to be announced tonight.

The benchmark index of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on Tuesday rallied by 347.52 points to 33,344.28 in opening trade as brisk buying was witnessed across the board.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan added 0.4 percent after four straight days of losses, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street.

HDFC Bank finished 1.1 percent higher.

The market is convinced the Fed will announce a quarter point hike at 1800 GMT, but are less sure if it will signal three or four for the year as a whole.

The NSE Nifty index was trading 92 points up at 10,217, while the BSE Sensex was up 318 points at 33,315 around 10:15 am (IST).

Sensex was up by 73.64 points or 0.22 per cent at the Tuesday's closing.

Axis Bank, BPCL, Bharti Airtel and Indiabulls Housing Finance climbed 1-3 percent in the Nifty pack, while Eicher Motors, Infratel and Hero MotoCorp were among the prominent decliners.

Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 344.16 crore on a net basis, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also purchased equities to the tune of Rs 731.17 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.

In other Asian Markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.25 percent while Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.40 percent in the early hours of trade today.
