The ban takes effect January 1, 2019, pending the mayor's approval, and applies to clothing or accessories made in whole or in part from fur, including handbags, shoes, slippers, hats, earmuffs, scarves, shawls, jewelry and more.

Fur showroom's owner, Benjamin Lin said stressed that he will keep his current location but start selling fur somewhere outside the San Francisco at a smaller place.

San Francisco has become the first major USA city to ban the sale of fur clothing and products.

This decision makes San Francisco the largest city to ban the sale of fur, following in the footsteps of its neighbor in the East Bay, Berkeley, and the city of West Hollywood nestled in the middle of bustling Los Angeles.

The legislation voted on Tuesday goes into effect January 1, but retailers have until January 2020 to sell off existing inventory.

San Francisco has a reputation for a strong social conscience, often at a cost to businesses. In 2016, San Francisco approved what was then a groundbreaking paid parental leave law, requiring private employers to offer six weeks of fully paid leave.

Senators captain Erik Karlsson, wife lose son
Now in his ninth National Hockey League season, Karlsson has eight goals and 48 assists for the struggling Senators. The hockey world reached out through social media to express their condolences after such a tragic loss.

The International Fur Federation and the Fur Information Council of America wrote a letter to the Board of Supervisors last week, saying the ban "would result in the loss of millions of dollars in tax revenues and jobs".

"It is estimated that around the world some 50 million animals are slaughtered in gruesome ways so that we can wear their fur and look fashionable", Supervisor Katy Tang told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Supervisor Katy Tang, who pushed for the ban, is less anxious about the financial ramifications and more concerned about animal welfare. "I will not win". The chamber estimates San Francisco fur sales account for at least $40 million a year. "I do not have the energy and the money".

San Francisco Mayor Mark Farrell said he supports the legislation and plans to "sign it when it crosses my desk".

However, the city said the prohibition is unlikely to harm the city's overall economy.

The proposal would allow the resale of vintage and used fur, but only by outlets not usually in the business of trading fur, such as secondhand stores, pawn shops and nonprofits. Items with fur taken from animals trapped under a state license can be sold.
