Hundreds take part in school walkout in Wyoming

Some held signs. Others wore orange.

The students walked with signs demanding an end to gun violence. That's why I participated in the walkout. Those kids in Parkland went through a transformational experience and have been able to express their fears, outrage and frustration in a way that has changed the conversation, turned the heat up and threatens the stranglehold on the extreme policies insisted on by the NRA and its sycophantic government representatives who are recipients of their large donations. Most fell somewhere in the middle. I like seeing kids getting involved, especially when it's about something that impacts them.

Knapp said the students approached him on Tuesday with a plan. How would 8th-grade students, for example, be allowed to participate or to share their thoughts?

In joining the protests, the students followed the example set by numerous survivors of the Florida shooting, who have become gun-control activists, leading rallies, lobbying legislators and giving TV interviews. And on April 20, students nationwide have planned a walkout on the anniversary of the Columbine school shooting in Colorado that killed 15 people 19 years ago. "We all need to understand that and understand that it's not right and we need to use kindness".

In Red Lake, the walkout carried deep significance.

At Albuquerque High School, almost all 1,750 students participated in the 17-minute classroom walkout, gathering in the school's common area. He killed seven people and wounded five more there, then killed himself after a brief shootout with police.

A student at Maplewood High School organized a walkout there with the help of the school's principal and vice principal. I'm sure the throngs that left their schools to bray about the well-being of their schoolmates with all those guns around would see the wisdom of such a measure and return again to the streets, leaving their instructors to the luxury of the faculty lounge.

I felt like the world was moving in slow motion.

As Tony Rothert, legal director of ACLU-Missouri said, schools can discipline students for missing class but they cannot punish them for their politics or the message behind their actions. "This needs to be their voice, right?"

"We are the voices the adults try to silence and ignore". They should, because they're not waiting for tomorrow - they're leading today.

Students in some cities issued specific demands for lawmakers, including mandatory background checks for all gun sales and a ban on assault weapons like the one used in the Florida bloodbath.

While some schools took the more reprehensible approach some schools chose to support and walk out with their students.

Even President Trump criticized the officers alleged inaction, saying he would have run into the school if he were in that same situation. "And teenagers shouldn't bring guns to school".

Maine Speaker of the House Sara Gideon, a Democrat from Freeport, posted a message showing video of the approximately 50 students in her hometown and surrounding communities who came out in spite of school closures to stand on a sidewalk holding signs representing the #Enough movement with messages including, "Enough Is Enough", "Protect The Children", and the slogan made a rallying cry by student protesters from Parkland, Florida: "We Call BS".

"MPS does not condone fighting or disrespectful behavior", said MPS spokesman Dirk Tedmon.
