Trump May Have Already Picked His New Top Economic Adviser

Navarro China is flooding world with ‘lethal’ products

Trump's pick will be a major sign about his economic agenda going forward.

President Donald Trump noted to reporters that TV economic analyst Larry Kudlow is a top contender to replace national economic council director Gary Cohn. "I'm looking at Larry Kudlow very strongly", Trump said on Tuesday when asked about Cohn's potential replacement. Now, according to two reports and sources, two clear frontrunners have emerged.

Kudlow declined to comment to CNBC, where he works as a senior contributor. Kudlow endorsed President Trump during the 2016 presidential election campaign, and as reported by CNBC, he has "informally advised Trump on taxes and other financial issues".

Kudlow served as a staff economist during the Ronald Reagan administration, was chief economist for Bear Stearns from 1987 to 1994, and has regularly appeared on CNBC since 2001.

Television personality Jim Cramer confirmed in a CNBC interview that Larry Kudlow is now "the leading candidate" to helm the National Economic Council.

Liddell now serves in the White House as the Director of Strategic Initiatives, working closely with Jared Kushner. In the same interview where he defended Cohn, Kudlow called Mr. Trump's tariffs "prosperity killers".

Trump has spoken to Kudlow multiple times over the past week, a separate person familiar with the matter said, but Kudlow hasn't been formally offered the job yet and hasn't decided whether he would accept it. Cohn had broken publicly with President Trump over his response to violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va. last summer, and was rumored to have considered leaving at the time.
