Releasing Jordy Nelson not an easy decision for Brian Gutekunst

Jamal Adams tried recruiting ex Packers WR Jordy Nelson to Jets via Twitter

Jordy Nelson being cut by the Green Bay Packers was a big piece of news on Tuesday, but some larger news may be on the horizon for one of Aaron Rodgers' former favorite targets at Lambeau Field. "We wish Jordy, his wife Emily, and the rest of their family all the best".

"I don't think it has any correlation to that", Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said after the Packers released Nelson.

After winning the Nfl's Comeback Player of the Year award following a torn acl in 2015, Nelson struggled to find the endzone after Aaron Rodgers was sidelined with a fractured right collarbone. "No teammate exemplified what it means to be a packer quite like him", Rodgers wrote.

Nelson will be 33 years old when next season starts and he's coming off a down year, by all standards. "There will never be another quite like white lightning".

"Definitely a sad day and the toughest part of this business", Rodgers said.

Alexis Sanchez sends cryptic message to Man United fans

Also, on Tuesday, the Packers committed to eventually signing defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson, who visited with the team last week. That came just one year after Nelson led the National Football League with 16 touchdowns, on 97 receptions for 1,257 yards.

Rodgers' career numbers when he targeted Nelson are nearly too good to believe.

Nelson finished with just 53 catches for 482 yards and six touchdowns a year ago, but that's due in large part to the fact that Aaron Rodgers suffered a broken collarbone in Week 6 and missed most of the season thereafter.

It's a money decision.

Nelson, who was slated to count $12.5 million against the Packers' salary cap, reportedly wasn't willing to take a pay cut. The Nelsons have spoken about their adoption of two children. While the Packers added tight end Jimmy Graham in another surpirse move, there's still a hole that must be filled at the wide receiver position. But let's remember that Rodgers only played seven games. It would be the easiest transition for Nelson, as he'd go from Rodgers throwing him the ball to Tom Brady.
