Hubert de Givenchy, French fashion icon, dies at 91

Among his many contributions to the fashion world, Givenchy is responsible for Audrey Hepburn's iconic little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany's, and also styled Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Givenchy is best known for designing personal and film wardrobes for Hepburn, a movie star and enduring muse and close friend for 40 years. The first lady wore a Givenchy design to her husband's funeral in 1963.

The French president's office praised Givenchy as a designer whose name became an emblem for French elegance, with one principle: "to respect and celebrate the woman's body". "He was among those designers who placed Paris firmly at the heart of world fashion post 1950 while creating a unique personality for his own fashion label", Arnault writes. "He will be greatly missed".

On a state visit to France the following year, Kennedy made a famously grand entrance in a Givenchy white silk faille dress at a state dinner at the Palace of Versailles, looking as regal as any European monarch's consort.

In the Winter of 2017, The House of Givenchy produced an exhibition entitled, "Hubert de Givenchy: To Audrey With Love".

Givenchy sold his namesake label to LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton in 1988 for $45 million.

Givenchy's eponymous fashion house, which he founded in 1952, later released a statement - describing the designer as a "gentleman who symbolised Parisian chic". He retired as the brand's chief designer in 1995, and was succeeded by John Galliano, the late Alexander McQueen, Julien Macdonald, Riccardo Tisci and most now Clare Waight Keller, the first woman in the role. Created for Audrey, who also starred as its face, it is thought to be the very first celebrity-fronted fragrance ad campaign.

Aiming to reach a wider market, Givenchy launched a line of upscale ready-to-wear and accessories in the 1960s.

The news of Givenchy's death was confirmed yesterday by his partner, couture designer Philippe Venet.
