Family, friends mourning the loss of Yountville shooting victims

Shots have been fired at Veterans Home of California in Yountville north of Napa according to Bay Area media reports

The home, which houses around 1,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, has been put into lockdown as authorities surround the property.

Wong allowed most of the staff to leave but demanded that three women remain behind.

A gunman has taken at least three people hostage at the largest care home for veterans in the United States.

"Despite being unarmed, they are tasked with the responsibility of protecting a very large campus of residents, staff, and visitors 24 hours a day, and local law enforcement relies on these public safety officers as the front-line security for the hospital", the statement read. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokeswoman Alexandria Corneiro did not respond to a request Monday about whether federal agents had traced the weapons used in the shooting or determined how many guns Wong owned. He was found dead, along with the three victims, as authorities entered the room of the hostage crisis shortly before 6 P.M. Friday night.

Police say former resident 36-year-old Albert Wong killed Pathway Home Executive Director Christine Loeber, Clinical Director Jennifer Golick, and Jennifer Gonzales Shushereba, a clinical psychologist with the San Francisco Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.

A family friend told The Associated Press that Gonzales was seven months pregnant.

Those who knew the women said they had dedicated their lives to helping those suffering like Wong, and they would've been in a good position to assist him if things had ended differently. "He was starting to feel like he was in a hopeless circle after a while".

When he learned that Loeber had been taken hostage, Turner hoped her natural empathy and critical thinking skills could resolve the standoff, he said.

California's Bureau of Security and Investigative Services said Monday that 36-year-old Albert Wong received permits to carry a 9-millimeter gun and to be a security guard on October 21, 2008. His license was canceled in October of previous year for reasons that have not yet been released to the public, according to the Press Democrat. He was deployed to Afghanistan for two years beginning in 2011.

Cunningham's parents reported him missing on February 16 after they went to his home and found his belongings and vehicle there. Cunningham's family and the Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta are offering a $15,000 reward for tips regarding the case.

He was a decorated soldier and was awarded the Expert Marksmanship Badge. Lampkin says Wong would obsess about relatively minor conflicts, such as someone owing him money or not pulling their weight. He moved back in with them for a little while in 2013 after he returned from his deployment in Afghanistan and kept in touch online. Sheer explained to the AP that Wong experienced a number of symptoms characteristic of PTSD.

According to Sherr, Wong had been seeking help for his PTSD for years. But he did not answer questions about why Wong was removed from the program.

State Senator Bill Dodd told KPIX 5 the suspected shooter Wong had trouble following the rules here at the Pathway Home and that he was dismissed for that reason.

CSLEA has also unsuccessfully attempted to convince the Department of Veteran Affairs to arm officers under an existing law, arguing the officers should be able to protect the people at state institutions and themselves.

Scott Sowle, executive director at Muir Wood Adolescent and Family Services, said Golick worked at the teen treatment center for five years before she worked at The Pathway Home.

Like Wong, many of those who have fought in the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere around the world are economic conscripts recruited from among the most vulnerable layers of society.

A 2008 study by the Pentagon-funded RAND Corporation found that almost 20 percent of veterans who had returned from deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan suffered from PTSD or depression.
