Salma Hayek Slams Mattel's Frida Kahlo Barbie Doll

Across the board A total of 14 important women are featured in the line including sports stars philanthropists and fashion icons

After a long survey that suggested mothers were unhappy that their kids do not have dolls with real inspiring women whom they would aspire to be, the big toy corporation launched 17 new models.

Salma Hayek expressed her displeasure with the Frida Kahlo Barbie doll.

Over the years the name and likeness of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, a fierce feminist and ardent communist, have been associated with a number of unlikely products. "How could they turn her into a Barbie", Hayek wrote, with two thumbs down and a "body image" hashtag.

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and Australian wildlife conservationist - and daughter of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin - Bindi Irwin are also among the new dolls as are famed aviator Amelia Earhart and NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson.

Mattel raised eyebrows, and indeed unibrows, on Wednesday when it announced that Kahlo - a brilliant painter famous for defying gender norms - would be included in its newest collection of Barbie dolls.

Critics have slammed Mattel for their representation of Kahlo, pointing out their decision to mostly eliminate her famous unibrow, flawless her famous look and glamorise her elaborate and traditional Tehuana-style dresses.

Southampton next manager odds: The favourites to replace sacked boss Mauricio Pellegrino
The final straw for the Saints board was the spineless 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Saturday when Pellegrino accused some of his players of giving up.

A row has broken out between relatives of the late Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and the corporation which claims it holds the rights to her image.

But Kahlo's family soon issued a statement objecting to the doll. Now, actor Salma Hayek, who portrayed Kahlo on silver screen too came out to slam the company.

Mattel, however, said in a statement that it obtained the rights legally through the Panama-based Frida Kahlo Corporation, "which owns all the rights", with a Mattel lawyer stating the company purchased the rights through Kahlo's niece, Isolda Pinedo Kahlo, more than a decade ago.

Pablo Sangri, Romeo's lawyer, communicated that the doll was a kind gesture but for the company to continue to sell the doll, it would need to be redesigned; features would have to be renegotiated.

Among the fiercest detractors are Kahlo's own family, who say Mattel is not authorized to be making money off of the late artist's likeness.

'We will talk to them about regularising this situation, and by regularising I mean talking about the appearance of the doll, its characteristics, the history the doll should have to match what the artist really was, ' Mr Sangri said.
