Flake to Introduce Legislation That Would Nullify Trump's Tariffs

Paul Ryan

President Trump signed proclamations Thursday imposing duties of 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on aluminum that will take effect in 15 days. NBC's Chuck Todd asked Flake.

"We in Congress simply can't be complicit as this administration courts economic disaster in this fashion".

"Yes, I do. I do", Flake replied. "The Heritage Foundation stands for an America where freedom, opportunity, prosperity, and civil society flourish". The Republican Party is the Trump party right now.

The next presidential election is still more than two years away, and despite a strong economy, President Trump could see a primary challenge coming from a member of his own party looking to unseat the commander in chief. "But that's not to say it will stay that way", Flake said.

On "Meet the Press", Flake said "tariffs are awful" for the economy and "tariffs married to uncertainty is probably even worse", referring to Trump's suggestion that he may allow certain exemptions and the possibility that the president may impose other tariffs.

"I think ultimately it can be good in the short term for steelworkers", said Assistant Professor of Economics at OSU Kyle Dempsey.

Man tries to stop hit and run with a sledgehammer
Police confirmed Sunday afternoon that there was a hit-and run crash on Northeast 36th Street and Biscayne Boulevard in Miami . He attempts to flee the scene of the crash several times but each attempt is blocked by witnesses in the area. "(Don't move!").

"If we don't trade, we don't grow". Since announcing his retirement in October, Flake has launched speeches on the Senate floor questioning Trump's fitness for office and calling his behavior "dangerous to our democracy".

Instead, Flake says "we have to have" more free trade and should have remained in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade deal, which Trump pulled the USA out of.

"Well, I can tell you when every question you get in the hallway going to vote is about this, it just becomes tiresome", Flake said.

"You know he likes to put names on people", Mnuchin said of Trump, who also branded Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters a "very low I.Q. individual". I understand that it's a challenge on the campaign trail, certainly, it's often easier to point to a shuttered factory and blame trade or immigration or some other convenient scapegoat other than what is usually the case, it's modernization or mechanization or something that has meant that we have increased productivity-productivity or the best allocation of capital to facilitate trade.
