Convicted 'Bookkeeper of Auschwitz' dies aged 96

Oskar Groening known as the'bookkeeper of Auschwitz who in 2015 became one of the last people to be convicted for crimes in the Nazi genocide has died aged 96

A former Nazi SS guard dubbed the "Bookkeeper of Auschwitz" has died aged 96 almost three years after his conviction for being an accessory to murder, German media said Monday.

Oskar Groening died Friday, according to German media. The office is awaiting an official death certificate, Soefker said.

The lawyer, Hans Holtermann, didn't immediately respond to a request for confirmation.

Groening, a former Auschwitz guard, was found guilty in 2015 for being an accessory to murder in hundreds of thousands of deaths at the concentration camp. He was expected to start his four-year prison sentence, but died at a hospital, the Jerusalem Post reported, citing Germany's Der Spiegel.

Groening was convicted in Lueneburg in 2015 as an accessory to the murder of 300,000 Jews.

At the trial, Groening admitted only to gathering money and valuables found in the luggage of the death camp victims and turning the property over to his superior officers.

All of his appeals were rejected, and it was only his ill health that kept him from being sent to prison in recent years. He asked for forgiveness and spoke openly of his experiences at the death camp, saying his testimony would stand in opposition to Holocaust deniers.

"No one should have taken part in Auschwitz", he said.

In 2016, former SS sergeant Reinhold Hanning was convicted on 170,000 counts of accessory to murder for serving as an Auschwitz guard.

His case followed the conviction of former concentration camp guard John Demjanjuk, who was sentenced because he had served at the Sobibor camp in occupied Poland - rather than for crimes he was known to have committed.
