Why the earth is not flat. Neil deGrasse Tyson destroys flat earthers

Earth from space

While "we have a video from space - of a rotating spherical earth", the people who believe that the earth is flat do not believe it.

Tyson also points out humans seem to have no problem with the concept of a round Sun and every other planet, yet believe the Earth is flat.

Is Earth a flat surface or a spherical surface?

Believe it or not, some people still believe the flat Earth theory, according to well-known astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, but in a new video, he offered up logical arguments for why it's actually a sphere.

"Flat-Earthers" are a small group who have gained notoriety in recent years for their unsubstantiated claims that the Earth's roundness is a conspiracy, and that the truth of the planet's shape is being withheld from the public. Gravity wouldn't work like it does on our planet if Earth were flat, due to the center of mass being in the middle of the disc instead of the center of a sphere, so that's right out the window.

Astrophysicist and television show host Neil deGrasse Tyson has discredited the flat Earth theory, blaming its rise on the freedom of speech and on a faulty educational system.

Tyron added that another evidence of the planet's round curvature can be seen during lunar eclipses. He also pointed out that when a ship sails away across the horizon, it eventually disappears because it drops below the horizon as it travels around Earth. Eratosthenes stated that when he looked for the bottom of the well in Syene, the bottom was clearly visible at the noontime but when he observed the other well in Alexandria at noontime, the bottom was not clearly visible. If a well is deep enough, it would only be possible to see the bottom of the well at noon when the sun is directly overhead - otherwise, the sunlight would be coming down at an angle that wouldn't reach the bottom of that well.

Tyson gave two explanations for this. If Earth were flat, sometimes you'd get a flat shadow.

Towards the end of the video, Tyson blames the faltering USA education system for the number of Flat Earthers that have sprung up in the country, noting that it's not so much about teaching children long-known facts, but also about teaching them how to effectively reason. Neil DeGrasse discussed the flat Earth theory as well as laws of physics and how universe favors spherical body in his book "Astrophysics for People in a Hurry".

"Our system needs to train you not only what to know, but how to think about information and knowledge and evidence", said Tyson. I mean, if a person is willing to believe that gravity, space, and the Moon are all fake, it's kind of hard to reason with them in the first place.
