PETA Director, Elisa Allen, said: "Crufts glorifies pedigree fetishists" twisted pursuit of the "perfect' dog".

"Crufts is a celebration of everything that's wrong with dog-breeding".

The head of the Irish Greyhound Board says the welfare of the dogs is their number one concern.

As the victor was announced of this year's Best in Show, a man rushed onto the show area sending the competitors and Clare Balding into a frenzy.

Two intruders, said by Crufts to be part of animal rights group Peta, ran into the show arena at Birmingham's NEC as the victor claimed her prize.

A female intruder was also wrestled to the ground by security staff.

One of the two protesters brandished a sign saying "Crufts: Canine Eugenics" after disturbing the event while the victor (a two-year-old whippet bitch called Tease with human companion Jill Peak) was being announced.

Short was seen running away from the commotion with her two-and-a-half-year-old pooch in her arms.

The man and woman were quickly chased down and tackled by security before being led away to huge applause from the crowd.

In the footage, which was partly captured and aired on Channel 4's live Crufts broadcast, a male protestor holding a placard that read "Crufts canine eugenics", ran into the arena.

Crufts and the NEC Group said they would review security procedures as "a matter of urgency" as the scare had frightened the dogs and risked their safety.

PETA later confirmed it had organised the protest, saying the demonstrators had "highlighted the suffering of dogs bred by humans to have grossly exaggerated features".

"Our main priority at the moment is the wellbeing of the dogs that were in the ring, who are being looked after by their owners and show officials".
