Twitter's CEO Admits The Platform Has Problems, Asks For Help

Twitter has struggled to regulate the Russian bots, alt-right agitators and run-of-the-mill trolls that have overrun its platform.

Twitter has become a wasteland for trolls to thrive, CEO Jack Dorsey said on Thursday - and he's looking for help in changing it.

'This is the approach we now need, ' Dorsey explained.

After years of withering criticism over the sludge of toxic interactions on its platform, Twitter has put out a call for outside experts to measure the health of public conversation there, a new effort to restore civil debate.

Dorsey concedes that the company has long focused on removing content in a sort of whack-a-mole system for dealing with abuse.

Both Twitter and Facebook are feeling public pressure to clean up their acts.

Twitter is asking for public and academic help. It's something Jen Golbeck, a professor at the University of Maryland's College of Information Studies, said she's glad to hear. It wants to work with academics and it has this request for proposals from researchers. In the past, she said, Twitter "made it incredibly hard for researchers to work with their data". It has limit on data and they restrict ability to share data.

Did Putin Just Threaten to Nuke Trump's Mar-a-Lago?
In his remarks, the Russian president said Moscow's new arsenal had been developed in response to Washington's moves. We are entering a new arms race, for sure.

Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey admitted the social media platform has been misused by bad actors as he announced plans for a new scheme to monitor the health of conversations on the service.

Shared Attention: Is there overlap in what we are talking about?

Why? We love instant, public, global messaging and conversation. "We know how to measure it, and we know some methods to bring it back in balance". "Our expectation is that successful projects will produce peer-reviewed, publicly available, open-access research articles and open source software whenever possible". The company is now soliciting proposals for measuring the healthiness of conversation on the service in order to improve it.

Trolls have always been a problem on Twitter.

In a tweetstorm on Thursday, the Twitter CEO said his company is searching for ways to root out trolling, bullying, hate speech, and political manipulation on the network. Twitter's previous press releases and statements are often, well, statements - confident declarations or descriptions of the facts at hand - while this reads more like an admission, and lacking in transparency about what their content policies were or how they would be applied. It also said it would suspend users who engage in "violent extremism".

Milo Yiannopoulos was permanently banned from Twitter for harassing comedian Leslie Jones.
