Oracle expands autonomous capabilities across cloud platform

Oracle CEO Mark Hurd

Cloud vendors are in a race to build data centers in as many countries as possible. But for Oracle, that might not be enough to keep up a healthy growth rate.

Along with software, platform and infrastructure services, the company also said it would expand its cloud services to address data security, AI and emerging blockchain application workloads.

Cloud transformation in this region will receive a boost with the launch of the new centre in Singapore.

Work is underway to upgrade those other eight existing facilities, the company said here at an Oracle CloudWorld conference this week. Oracle promised that the end result will be a higher level of reliability.

Oracle hasn't disclosed how much it will spend on this initiative, but it's likely to be steep. If database speeds, as an example, drop below a given threshold for a certain period of time, the company will give the affected customers credits they can redeem against their cloud bill. Oracle said that it will guarantee that its Oracle Cloud infrastructure "will deliver more than 90 percent of published performance every day in a given month".

On top of the feature set, Oracle is also extending its cloud platform's physical reach.

And Oracle is sure to see more competition specifically for making cloud operations more automated.

Verizon to Lock Down Phones for Limited Time to 'Combat Theft'
It will then lock new smartphones to its network for an unspecified time before allowing customers to unlock them. As the publication noted, most USA carriers do keep their phones locked to their service for a period of time.

It is possible Amazon and Microsoft don't view performance as enough of an issue that it must be written into their contracts.

François Lançon (pic, right), senior vice president, Oracle Japan and Asia Pacific, said: "Singapore is a hot-bed of SMBs and digital transformation; they make up 99% of companies in Singapore and contribute almost half to Singapore's gross domestic product (GDP)". "Unfortunately, many cloud SLAs don't make that broad commitment".

"Now Oracle is adding autonomous capabilities to data management, application development, integration, analytics, security and systems is setting a new industry standard for autonomous cloud capabilities", the firm said. Further, the executive said that the company is working towards integrating the autonomous capabilities into the cloud to offer better security, innovation and competitive advantage to the customers. The range of services available will push Oracle closer towards its "self-driving" cloud vision, where configuration is fully automated and the service revolves around the organisation's requirements.

"With Oracle revealing its AI and machine learning-based autonomous PaaS, Oracle is bringing productivity gains, cost reduction and human error reduction to the forefront of enterprises looking for possible ways to drive faster innovation".

The announcement comes barely months after Oracle chairman Larry Ellison, in October past year, showcased the company's Autonomous Database, christened 18C.

"It sounds like they're getting it right and it's certainly a departure from how they used to talk about cloud services - and a welcome departure", he said.
