Katie Couric Apologizes for Out-of-Touch Dutch Olympics Comments

Sven Kramer of the Netherlands clearly the best in his country at getting to work on time

"It's probably not a news flash to tell you the Dutch are really, really good at speed skating", Katie Couric, 61, said during the Parade of Nations segment of the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony on February 9, per Yahoo!

Couric's comments came during the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. Some people posted photos of people ice skating and sarcastically captioned them as Amsterdam citizens commuting home.

"It is probably not a news flash to tell you the Dutch are really, really good at speedskating", she said. All but five of the 110 medals they've won have been on the speed skating oval.

Katie Couric has apologized for saying the Dutch are so successful in speed skating because skates have been used as a form of transportation when canals freeze in the Netherlands. In regards to their talent, Couric said that the Dutch skated to work, a comment that was met with a lot of criticism - including from the U.S. Embassy in the Netherlands.

Hey, at least she knows they don't all wear wooden shoes.

Kuwait condemns Philippine president's call to evacuate workers
Those interviewed by Arab News, majority household workers, said they went to Kuwait to provide a better life for their families. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during a meeting in Kuwait of the global coalition against Islamic State.

While it sounds plausible, the Dutch canals have not frozen over in decades.

Hopefully the Netherlands will take the olive branch extended by Couric, we'll have to wait and see what the next move is in this ice-skating chess match of a back and forth.

Since her comments have gone viral, many have taken to Twitter to parody her comments, but also to criticize Couric. Deadline reported that the critics loved the duo and thought that they did an incredible job with the opening ceremony. And one more joked that, "The Dutch do NOT skate to work".

Katie Couric apologized on Twitter Monday after making some odd claims about the Dutch while covering the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. "And this folks is why Americans are less bright about the rest of the world as they spread fake news!"

Couric was not the only NBC employee who was under severe scrutiny for their coverage of the Winter Olympics.
