South African President Zuma's destiny to be selected Monday, says ANC head

South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa lays the groundwork for his transition to power

Mr Zuma, who no longer holds a top position in the party, has overseen a tumultuous nine years in power marked by economic decline and numerous allegations of corruption.

"I was young in 1990 when Nelson Mandela was released, but maybe Ramaphosa will inspire us the way Mandela inspired people the day he was freed from prison", she said.

"It creates uncertainty and investors are starting to ask themselves if Ramaphosa really does have control over the ANC, and specifically the Zuma faction".

"We know you want this matter to be finalised".

Correspondents say that if the NEC agrees to recall Mr Zuma, it would be very hard for him to resist.

It is likely to be carried because many previous diehard Zuma backers in Parliament have publicly jumped ship and openly declared support for Ramaphosa as the new president of the ANC.

"We know you want closure - we will be doing so keeping our eyes on what is in the interests of all our people", Ramaphosa, who is the country's deputy president, said to loud applause.

Zuma had been due to officiate at a diplomatic awards ceremony in Cape Town on Saturday, according to his office, but that event has been postponed. Nelson Mandela was totally committed against corruption, theft and robbery of the assets of our people.

African National Congress (ANC) president, Cyril Ramaphosa has called for unity amid the ongoing water crisis in the Western Cape.

Unveiling of Jaya portrait irks Oppn
On Saturday, the State government said the late CM's portrait would be unveiled in the Assembly on Monday by Assembly Speaker P. Jayalalithaa's death in 2016, before the Supreme Court upheld the conviction, resulted in the charges against her being abated.

"Ramaphosa must come - then we'll be having a real president".

To carry out Mandela's legacy, the ANC must fight corruption, Ramaphosa said.

He pledged to tackle the corruption that has marred Mr Zuma's time in office.

"We have arrived at a moment in the history of our country where we can relive that moment when Nelson Mandela was released".

That Zuma take Ramaphosa on a tour to Africa and the world to introduce him to leaders, because he is not known.

"He is not willing to step down voluntarily".

NEC is a key ANC decision-making body that has the power to instruct Mr Zuma to resign.

In 2008, shortly after taking the party's helm, Zuma engineered the ousting of Thabo Mbeki from the presidency.

Under Zuma, the ANC suffered its worst electoral setback since coming to power under Mandela in 1994, winning less than 54 percent of the vote in municipal elections in 2016.
