North Korea had frank, candid talks with South's president: KCNA

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's sister joined South Korea's president at a concert Sunday as she wound up a whirlwind round of Olympic diplomacy capped by an invitation to hold the first summit between the two adversaries in more than a decade.

"What can not be overlooked is that Moon did not directly demand North Korea to abandon its nuclear development".

The North Koreans were to fly back to Pyongyang later Sunday on a private jet, wrapping up a three-day trip.

The Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim Yo Jong delivered a letter and message from her brother during the meeting Saturday in Seoul, but did not mention that Kim Jong Un invited Moon to visit Pyongyang for a summit. When asked what exact steps North Korea would have to take to get sanctions relief, he said: "I don't know".

The shameful coverage of this year's Olympics began even before the opening ceremony. The marked development comes after months-long tensions in the region filled with aggressive military manoeuvres, missile launches and nuclear tests.

Take, for example, the following headlines - ones you'd normally expect to find in North Korea's state-run media. North Korea is subject to heavy United Nations and U.S. sanctions created to pressure the reclusive, one-party state to abandon its development of nuclear and ballistic missiles.

Pence, who was in South Korea for the Olympics, has said the United States and South Korea were closely aligned in their approach to dealing with North Korea.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Major protests have erupted in South Korea as activists burn the North's flag.

Any meeting would represent a diplomatic coup for Moon, who swept to power a year ago on a policy of engaging more with the reclusive North and has pushed for a diplomatic solution to the standoff over North Korea's nuclear and missile program.

Moon has expressed hope the détente could lead to a broader dialogue with the United States.

As the opening ceremony unfolded in PyeongChang, television cameras were fixed on Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of dictator Kim Jong Un.

Among those who participated in such meetings were the late leader and father of Kim Jong-un, Kim Jong-il, and the late former presidents of the South, Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun, respectively.

She was apparently referring to the challenge in coordinating policy toward North Korea after its recent surprise offer of an inter-Korean summit.
