North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has invited the South's President Moon Jae-in for a summit in Pyongyang, Seoul said Saturday.

A pair of impersonators dressed as United States President Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong-un were "shown out by security staff" after arriving at PyeongChang Olympic Stadium, according to a Reuters report.

It was a historic moment, and it happened even before the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics had officially begun.

According to Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin, Pence told him the USA could engage in dialogue after two substantive conversations with South Korean leader Moon Jae-in last week.

Speaking to the Washington Post aboard Air Force Two on his way home from the Games, Pence said Washington would keep up its "maximum pressure campaign" against Pyongyang but would be open to possible talks at the same time.

Rogin said that the proposed course of diplomacy signifies that the US and its allies will not stop imposing pressure on Pyongyang until it takes clear steps toward denuclearization but the Trump administration is willing to sit down and talk with the regime while that pressure campaign is ongoing. "But if you want to talk, we'll talk".

"It is absolutely necessary for the North and the United States to engage in talks at an early date", he cited Moon as saying.

North Korea has spent years developing its military, saying it needs to protect itself from US aggression.

North and South Korea are technically still at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.

While the North Korean high-level delegation's visit to the South last week marked a starting point for the peaceful resolution of issues on the Korean peninsula, the official said there hadn't been progress on the denuclearization agenda.

The South's Unification Ministry said steps to improve ties would be led by the two Koreas, but with the support of the worldwide community.

She is due to have a sit-down luncheon tomorrow with President Moon along with the rest of the North Korean delegation - including the man sat next to her Kim Yong-nam.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach will visit North Korea after the Games as part of an agreement between the IOC and North and South Korea, a source within the Olympic movement told Reuters on Monday.
