Government Shutdown Averted Following House Of Representatives Vote

Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell waves as he leaves the Senate chamber early Friday Feb. 9 2018 on Capitol Hill in Washington after the Senate passed a budget deal and spending measure to reopen the federal government sending the bill to the Ho

The media covered news of the compromise budget deal reached by Democrats and Republicans in the Senate, which did not go over well with conservatives and liberals in the House of Representatives. Paul sought a vote on an amendment to restore budget caps in the funding bill. "He is ready to proceed at any time", Paul spokesman Sergio Gor told Reuters in an email.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., blocked a budget deal Thursday as the government ran out of funding at midnight. John Cornyn, as his requests to move to a vote were repeatedly rejected by Paul.

The measure - which would shower the Pentagon and domestic programs with around $400 billion in new spending - was destined for overwhelming Senate approval, no matter what Paul did.

But many Democrats, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), are hesitant to support the bill because it doesn't include a path to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants, also known as DREAMers.

With party unity fraying in the lower chamber over the deal, House Speaker Paul Ryan appeared to shrug off concerns that several Republicans might oppose the deal.

Mr Paul brushed off the pressure, saying: "I didn't come up here to be part of somebody's club".

"We will effectively shut down the federal government for no good reason", said Sen.

The budget deal passed by U.S lawmakers early on Friday will alleviate the spending fights that marked President Donald Trump's first year in office, but sets the stage for a battle over immigration and who is to blame for exploding deficits ahead of November's congressional elections.

Paul came to the Senate in 2009 after defeating a GOP primary opponent that McConnell had actively supported.

The Republican Party was once known for fiscal conservatism, but congressional Republicans and Trump are now quickly expanding the USA budget deficit and its $20 trillion national debt.

But many Democrats were unhappy with the compromise as well because it doesn't tackle immigration - specifically addressing the plight of DREAMers, including the roughly 700,000 immigrants who are in the USA illegally after being brought to the country as children and who are enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which is set to expire on March 5.

Democratic Senator Jon Tester said he hoped House Democrats would back the measure.

"We'll be ready", she told reporters.

Beyond $300 billion worth of increases for the military and domestic programs, the agreement adds $89 billion in overdue disaster aid for hurricane-slammed Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, a politically charged increase in the government's borrowing cap and a grab bag of health and tax provisions. There's also $16 billion to renew a slew of expired tax breaks that Congress seems unable to kill. Jeff Flake, Republican from Arizona. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz. "But the problem is the only time we discover bipartisanship is when we spend more money". "Vote against the budget", urged Democratic Representative Luis Gutierrez.

"I understand my friend and colleague from Kentucky does not join the President in supporting the bill, and it's his right, of course, to vote against the bill, but I would argue that it's time to vote", McConnell said. "I think he takes policy disputes in hand".

In a Twitter post that acknowledged the misgivings of fiscal conservatives, the Republican president said after signing the measure, "Without more Republicans in Congress, we were forced to increase spending on things we do not like or want in order to finally, after many years of depletion, take care of our Military" with additional funding.

The agreement would increase the government's borrowing limit to prevent a first-ever default on USA obligations that looms in just a few weeks. Such debt limit votes are usually enormous headaches for GOP leaders, but the increase means another vote won't occur before March 2019.
