A hot cuppa increases risk of oesophageal cancer, study finds

Participants of the research study who took hot tea consumed alcohol and smoked tobacco were found to be five times more at risk of getting oesophagal cancer than those who avoided all these.

The new study found that daily hot-tea consumption - even if it was served burning hot - was not associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer in people who were not smokers and did not drink alcohol heavily, Lv said.

However, the absence of both excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, daily tea drinking was not associated with esophageal cancer risk.

"Drinking hot tea contributed to cancer only when it clustered with smoking and drinking alcohol excessively", lead author Jun Lv, Professor at Peking University in Beijing was quoted as saying by CNN.

In 2016, the World Health Organization reported that hot drinks might be a cause of esophageal cancer because the repeated ingestion of hot drinks such as tea or coffee can cause irritation of the esophagus mucosa and, consequently, inflammation of the esophagus, which can cause the development of abnormal cells that can promote esophageal cancer.

Response: It's important to abstain from high-temperature tea in excessive alcohol consumers and smokers for esophageal cancer prevention.

The ages of the participants ranged between 30 and 79 years old.

Recently, the International Agency for Research on Cancer termed taking beverages above 65 degree as 'probably carcinogenic to humans'.

China is among the countries with the highest incidence of esophageal cancer, researchers note in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

And the chance of getting cancer by people who did all three went up five fold. Tea drinkers were asked to self-report whether the tea they consumed was room temperature, warm, hot or burning hot. However, further research studies are needed to confirm it.

In an editorial Dr Farin Kamangar of the Morgan State University and Dr Neal Freedman of the National Cancer Institute, both in Maryland. said the idea that hot drinks may cause the cancer dates to the 1930s. According to a 2009 study in the journal Nature Reviews Cancer, components of tea leaves have been shown to have antioxidant properties and may protect against other types of cancers, particularly colon and prostate cancer.

'Of importance, however, is that the accumulated literature suggests little risk from hot drinks at temperatures below 65C (149F). This they say is unlikely to cause cancer.

They concluded: 'Perhaps those of us who drink hot beverages often should be prudent and wait for the liquid to cool a bit first.
