Local nurse's video rant on disastrous flu season goes viral

Lockler, who urges people to wash their "stinking hands" in the video, said she posted the video following a 12-hour move at the healing facility. She then fakes a sneeze and directs the blow into her elbow.

"Let me show you again in slow motion!" she said, before doing it one more time. "Because guess what? You just got maybe 15 new vectors, or carriers of the flu, by them all walking in".

"If you don't have a true emergency this is not the time to come into the emergency room", Katherine Locklear, an emergency room nurse from Pensacola says in a viral video that has been shared more than 5.5 million times since Saturday. Locklear works at multiple emergency rooms in northwest Florida, according to the Pensacola News Journal.

"Please don't bring your team in". "Especially your newborn babies into the emergency room".

Oh, and she also has a message for everyone yelling at her about the long wait in the emergency room these days: "If you ain't dying now, you're going to have to wait a little bit longer", she says. "And instead of the dad receiving what a nurse of 10 years is sharing with him, he said, 'Eh, it's no big deal, it'll build his immune system.' So there's a lack of understanding and a lack of interest in knowing what to do to protect themselves sometimes".

She told the Pensacola News Journal that the video was meant to send a message from a health care professional's perspective. "It's the first time I've been offered these when I walked in an ER". She went on to apologize to anyone offended by her tone, but insists that regardless of how she may have come off the message is still "right on the money".

Flu season is well under way, bringing with it plenty of people suffering through terrible symptoms, and even more medical professionals wishing that the general public would take better safety precautions.

This year's flu season has proved to be particularly challenging across the U.S. As of January 26, there's been 37 pediatric deaths, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In total, the agency said, 37 children have died during the current flu season.

Katherine Smith Lockler, of Milton, Florida, chose to air her frustration Saturday after finishing a 12-hour shift at the hospital, the Miami Herald reported.

The video on Facebook has been viewed more than 700,000 times and "liked" more than 2,200 times as of Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency rooms across the country have become Ground Zero locations in the deadly flu epidemic. The Florida Board of Nursing was not immediately able to verify the claim.

"Please thank an ER nurse - and every nurse and doctor [who] is taking care of sick people right now", Lockler added.

Lockler told the Pensacola News Journal she recorded the video after a 12-hour shift on January 27 because she's concerned people aren't taking the proper precautions during a nasty flu season. "We're putting ourselves into the thick of some nasty germs to help".
