US Senate talks advance as government workers shut down

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi answers questions on the possibility of a government shutdown at the U.S. Capitol

Earlier on Saturday, he again bashed Democrats, tweeting that they were more "concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our risky Southern Border". The Dems just want illegal immigrants to pour into our nation unchecked. The Senate must still grant final approval of the bill, and it must then be approved by the House.

Democrats get nothing right now.

With elections set in November for a third of US Senate seats and the entire House of Representatives, both sides are maneuvering for the shutdown. "It takes 60 votes in the Senate".

Sixty votes were needed to advance the bill to keep the government open, but it failed 50-49. Republican Senators Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Rand Paul (R-KY) also voted against it.

Over the weekend, Trump encouraged the Senate's Republican leaders to invoke the "nuclear option" - a procedural maneuver to change the chamber's rules to allow passage of a budget by a simple majority of 51 votes to end the shutdown.

Democrats would come away from this deal with nothing but a promise, maybe, of a future vote. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., on ABC's "This Week".

The BBC says the shutdown, which began on the first anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration, casts doubt on whether the president will attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he is due to meet delegates including Theresa May this week.

Democrats say short-term spending legislation must include protections for illegal immigrants brought to the USA as children, known as "Dreamers".

But it left out any action on the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA, that affects Dreamers.

Trump backs full citizenship for Dreamers
The Justice Department last week appealed to both courts, which Attorney General Jeff Sessions acknowledged was a "rare step". Addressing the status of the Dreamers' parents, who brought them into America illegally, would be "tricky", Trump said.

Among those losing pay until the impasse is solved are more than 300,000 civilian defence workers. While there have been multiple bills introduced in Congress, GOP leadership has not committed to bringing up any specific legislation.

Republicans are pinning the blame squarely on the Senate Democrats. They say Democrats are overly focused on DACA and overlooking other pressing matters that will be affected by the shutdown.

Chuck Schumer, the Senate's top Democrat, indicated earlier Sunday that he would continue to lead a filibuster of the stopgap spending measure, while congressional Republicans appeared content to let the pressure build on the second day of the government shutdown.

"It's nearly as if you were rooting for a shutdown", Schumer said, referring to Trump.

Giving an insight into the planning objective, Mulvaney said the military will still go to work; the border will still be patrolled; fire folks will still be fighting the fires; and the parks will be open. "We are not going to weaponize it", Mulvaney said Friday. GOP lawmakers argued that Democrats were blocking extra Pentagon money by keeping the government closed and thwarting a long-term budget deal.

Trump also laid the entire blame of the stalemate at the doorstep of Democrats whom he accused of obstructing measures to keep the government running and pushed for more Republicans to be elected into congress in 2018.

The announcement comes after Democrats and Republicans once again failed to come to an agreement on a spending bill concerning key issues like immigration and health care.

The finger-pointing played out in both the House and Senate, where lawmakers were eager to show voters they were actively working for a solution - or at least actively making the case the other party was at fault. "It's next to impossible", Schumer said.
